ScHoolboy Q – “NigHtmare On Figg St.”

by Potholes In My Blog on Jan 27, 2012, 5:35pm

ScHoolboy Q hasn’t shown any signs of letting up since he dropped his HABITS & Contradictions album a few weeks ago. Not only has he kept his grind up, but it seems like critics and fans across the internet have been taking pretty kindly to his full-length. After dropping the visuals to the A$AP Rocky assisted “Hands on the Wheel” last week, Q unveils the accompanying video to the much darker “NigHtmare On Figg St.” In such a short period of time, it looks like TDE and the Black Hippy movement is ready to take over the hip-hop scene. HABITS & Contradiction is out now on iTunes.

Built to Spill, J Mascis Record Electronic Dinosaur Jr. Project

by TwentyFourBit on Jan 27, 2012, 4:35pm

On Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson’s inaugural release as the Electronic Anthology Project, the Built to Spill duo took on music by their own band, re-recording popular BTS tunes in an ’80s electro-pop style. The result was both an oddly appealing experiment and entertaining way to deconstruct the guitar-driven work for which they’re better known. Now EAP is back with perhaps the best indie-rock guitarist ever in tow: J Mascis and Nelson have teamed up to electrify the Dinosaur Jr. catalog with Mascis providing lead vocals on a new set due out April 21 for Record Store Day.

While a digital version will likely become available, à la the Built to Spill release, copies of the eponymous Electronic Anthology Project of Dinosaur Jr. will be limited to 500, pressed on (Mascis’ favorite color) purple vinyl.

For a taste of what’s to come, or if you missed their laudable 2010 effort, revisit Martsch’s work on lead vox for “Eels” — aka “Else” — after the jump.

Memoryhouse – “Walk With Me”

by Earbuddy on Jan 27, 2012, 3:35pm

On February 28th Memoryhouse will release their debut full-length album The Slideshow Effect. The new 10-track album was produced by band member, Evan Abeele, and marks a sonic shift for the group from a “bedroom recording project” into a fully realized band. We previously shared the track “The Kids Were Wrong”, but that’s old news now. No, we’re all about “Walk With Me” these days. Memoryhouse have made the song available via the old tactic of exchanging it for your email, which will lead to them sending you emails every now and then. Will you give up your email?

Lana Del Rey Planning to Re-Release Lizzy Grant Album

by Pretty Much Amazing! on Jan 27, 2012, 1:35pm

We just got through sharing our thoughts on Lana Del Rey’s massively hyped Born To Die LP, and now we’re hearing that LDR is planning to re-release her 2010 album, under her Lizzy Grant album. According to the BBC, Del Rey has acquired the rights to the album (for a relatively low $10,000) and will be releasing it later this year.

“People act like it’s so shrouded in mystery, the ‘forgotten terrible album’,” said Del Rey. “But if you look on YouTube, all 13 tracks are available with millions of views, so it’s not like no-one’s heard them. We were all proud of it. It’s pretty good.”

We haven’t checked out the Lizzy Grant album ourselves, but the genuinely great album-closer, “Yayo,” has stayed with us for a few weeks.

The Troggs’ Reg Presley Forced to Retire After Lung Cancer Diagnosis

by Live4ever - The Indie Rock Daily on Jan 27, 2012, 12:35pm

The longtime frontman of The Troggs, Reg Presley, has revealed he has been forced to retire from the band he has led since the Sixties after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Presley broke the news on the band’s official website, explaining how tests undertaken following an illness last month led to the diagnosis.

“I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer,” he wrote. “I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.”

“However I’ve had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years.”

The Troggs have released 12 studio albums during their career, and are best known for the 1966 trans-Atlantic hit “Wild Thing,” which was originally recorded by The Wild Ones a year earlier.

Watch: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia Cover Devo

by Cover Me on Jan 27, 2012, 11:35am

The second season of IFC’s sketch series Portlandia premiered earlier this month. For all the comedic acclaim stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein receive, they garner equal acclaim for their musicianship. We recently covered the duo playing “Push It” on their Portlandia tour, and now they have covered Devo’s “Beautiful World” during a Rolling Stone interview that turned into an informal session.

The song is already a familiar selection for Armisen, with Brownstein trying to learn as they go. Despite the way the performance teeters between part lesson, and part solo, it’s charming, and the conversation that leads them into playing “Beautiful World” is worth a listen.

The Books Call It Quits, Plan Farewell Releases

by onethirtybpm on Jan 27, 2012, 10:35am

In an email interview with Pitchfork, Nick Zammuto talked about his new musical project, called Zammuto. And, while this is all interesting, Zammuto (the guy, not the band) let it be known that The Books were splitting for good. On the topic, Zammuto said “it’s been an extraordinarily painful year coming to the realization that there was no way forward for the band. I love the Books and all that it became, and it still feels strange to me that such an odd little project moved people like it did.”

When asked why The Books were coming to an end, Zammuto answered:

Right now, going into the details of it does not serve anyone, and I’m still too close to it to talk about it without getting angry. It’s best for it to remain a mystery for a while. I doubt we will work together again, and unfortunately it almost certainly means we will retire the name after these last releases are out. I think The Way Out was an optimistic attempt to see if it could still work, and I remember thinking, even back then, that it might be a very aptly named record. I think [Paul and I] deserve a shot at rebuilding, so that will be my focus. And I’m excited to focus on the next phase now.

But, fans of the band can take some comfort in the fact that “a couple LPs worth of B-sides and soundtracks, a box set with the four [Books] records, and an updated DVD” should all be available later this year. We’ll keep you posted on further information when it is known. And, for more about Zammuto (the band, not the guy), check out the rest of the Pitchfork interview.

Azealia Banks Performs “212″ at Karl Lagerfeld’s House

by Hype Floats on Jan 27, 2012, 9:35am

If you don’t know who Karl Lagerfeld is, and you care to – google him, there’s plenty of prose about old boy, and I don’t really have the patience to copy and paste it here. He’s a big swinging dick in the fashion field, and as such he had Azealia Banks pop over to his home to perform. The performance is extremely awkward, and it’s kind of amazing, enjoy.
