Sun Kil Moon – “Sunshine in Chicago”

by Merchants of Rock on Feb 22, 2012, 1:35pm

Mark Kozelek, the man behind the vehicle Sun Kil Moon always seems to be flying under the radar. His no frills approach to his craft has resulted in some wonderful tunes over the years, but his name and the moniker under which he performs have managed to elude anything that resembles a spotlight.

That said, it should come as no surprise that his latest effort showed once again with little fanfare – serving as a most pleasant surprise on a Tuesday morning. “Sunshine in Chicago” is the first single from his upcoming LP, Among the Leaves. The new tune picks up on the stripped down feel of his last effort, Admiral Fell Promises but this time adds some keys into the mix. Check it out after the jump, and look out for Among the Leaves, out on May 29 via Kozelek’s own label Caldo Verde.

Rufus Wainwright – “Montauk”

by The Muse In Music on Feb 22, 2012, 11:25am

Rufus Wainwright has been quoted as saying that his upcoming album Out of the Game will be his “poppiest ever” but by the sounds of “Montauk” might be the exception that proves the rule. “Montauk” is a simple piece featuring just Wainwright and his piano singing a ballad to Montauk where he, his partner and one year old daughter live. It’s not the greatest track that Wainwright has even written though. The song’s theme and arpeggio piano starts to run a little thin towards the end.

by Scott Tomford on Feb 17, 2012, 11:35am

From time to time, MMN asks its favorite artists to create personally curated playlists for our curiosity-satisfying- and audio-streaming pleasure. Themes and styles will  vary, but you’ll always know your favorite bands just a little better after listening.

Today’s MMN Artist Radio DJ is: The Two.

Some of the best indie folk has a certain unnerving quality to it, and French duo the Two are no exception. On their recently released self-titled debut, they manage to create a calming, intimate sound, but songs like “I Wanna Be With You” still have a hauntingly strange aura about them, making for an intriguing listen. To celebrate the album’s release, the Two crafted an exclusive playlist for MOG that they listened to flying from Paris to New York, including cuts by Lana Del Rey and LCD Soundsystem. Check out the band’s full tracklist, and stream the entire playlist after the jump….
